BIOGRAPHY

Tina Newlove has been working as a professional artist since 1996 when she graduated with distinction from the Honours Fine Art program at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario .

Since 1993 Tina's paintings have been accepted into over seventy juried exhibitions both nationally and internationally as well as receiving awards within the exhibitions. At the Women Made Gallery in Chicago IL , Tina's image "Mocker" was chosen for use on the invitation for the Women, Trauma & Visual Expression exhibition. Artists from Canada , the US , Israel , Europe and South America were represented in this show. In Januarym 2005 Tina received the "Frank Faubert Memorial Award for Art" which is also a purchase award by the City of Toronto for their permanent collection. This February the Las Vegas Arts Council ( New Mexico ) presented Tina with an Honourable Mention for her painting Transparent Women: Prophetess, Muse, Grace.

At 24, Tina was the youngest person invited to join the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto. Once a year The Arts & Letters Club honours an artist by asking them to produce an elaborate manuscript naming the members of the Club's Officers and Executive. Tina was commissioned in 1998 to create this manuscript for their historical collection.

Tina's personal motivation and commitment to her painting practice includes the study of and research into tools, materials and techniques. She keeps exploring and searching out new ways to communicate her thoughts and feelings through her paintings as well as sharing her insights and technical skills with the many people she has taught in her classes over the last 10 years.

Art organizations in which Tina is a member include The Arts & Letters Club of Toronto, The Society of Canadian Artists, Fine Arts Society of Milton, CARFAC Ontario and Visual Arts Ontario.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My new work explores memories, moments and the cycles found in everyday living. The abstracts explore the patterns and sounds of the city, the park and my house. The post-it notes tend to be quick thoughts, quiet moments and things to remember. I paint mainly in oils on wood, canvas and paper. I assemble pieces with stitching (which binds my thoughts together), silver leaf (because it tarnishes), gold leaf (because it doesn't), dictionaries, wood, bronze and fabric. The weave in the fan, the stitching on the organ, the bowl of apples, the steady chug of the dishwasher and Tekno music thumping away in the background all contribute to my art-making practice. While I cherish the beautiful, the delicate, the detailed, the organic and the non-violent, I often paint my experience with violence, despair, the poor and the war-torn.
