Luis Mallo was born in Havana, Cuba and studied Photography and Graphic Design at the Fashion Institute of Design in New York City. He has exhibited widely in the United States, Europe and Latin America. He is a recipient of the Cintas Fellowship and the Art Matters Photography Award. His photographs are included in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Worcester Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Art in Florida, the Smithsonian Institute, the New York Public Library, and the George Eastman House of Photography in addition to other public and private collections.
His most recent series In Camera was featured in a group exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, at a solo show at the Sicardi Gallery and the Ricco-Maresca Gallery in NYC. In 2005, the series will be included in the exhibit Documenting Poetry at the Maier Museum of Art in Virginia. Luis Mallo is represented by the Ricco-Maresca Gallery in New York, the Sicardi Gallery in Houston, and the Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
The urban landscapes depicted in these large-scale photographs are interrupted or obstructed by a foreground object or layer. The barrier acts like a veil that drapes, surrounds, separates, distorts and conceals in a manner that manages to both perplex and seduce. But the barrier is never meant to the completely opaque or impenetrable. Through the holes, gaps, tears and openings in the foreground we are invited to peak and look beyond this layer or coating and acknowledge the space that lies on the other side. This veil therefore acquires an ambiguous nature: as it simultaneously hides and reveals, it asks us to consider the very notion of seeing as fragmentary and contingent, and also invites us to imagine and fill in the entire landscape as we attempt to perceive our surroundings.
