ARTIST STATEMENT

The urban landscapes depicted in these large-scale photographs are interrupted or obstructed by a foreground object or layer. The barrier acts like a veil that drapes, surrounds, separates, distorts and conceals in a manner that manages to both perplex and seduce. But the barrier is never meant to the completely opaque or impenetrable. Through the holes, gaps, tears and openings in the foreground we are invited to peak and look beyond this layer or coating and acknowledge the space that lies on the other side. This veil therefore acquires an ambiguous nature: as it simultaneously hides and reveals, it asks us to consider the very notion of seeing as fragmentary and contingent, and also invites us to imagine and fill in the entire landscape as we attempt to perceive our surroundings.
