BIOGRAPHY

Jane Burns is a Toronto painter and print maker with a stellar reputation for her fine works.  She is a Fine Arts graduate from the University of Toronto and her works have been showing in Toronto galleries for over 20 years.  She has also exhibited in many cities across Canada and the United States.  Her works can be seen in the permanent art collection of the University of Toronto, the Art Rental Department of Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, and numerous other private and public collections.  Jane lectures and instructs in the art of printmaking. She spends summers in Big Bay at her northern studio with her dog Finegan.
While continuing to explore printmaking through woodcut, stencil and chine-collé, the latest series draws from a life-long passion for painting and is based on images of urban streetscapes.  Some works border on total abstraction but images emerge from the diversity of cities inspired by industrial landscapes, infrastructure, bridges, city-scapes, waterways and green-space.  One is compelled to sense the pulse, the energy, the degradation, the soaring human spirit, the ingenuity, the smog, and ultimately the irony of city life.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The way I work mirrors the dynamism I see in nature and the world. Volatile artwork reflects turbulent times.  My work is improvised but it leads to a succinct point of view.  I sculpt, paint, brush, glaze, layer, tweak, unify, and shape.
